Tyneside beauty queen Alisha Cowie has revealed she intends to continue with her charity work after completing her Miss World experience.

The former Miss Newcastle and current Miss England jetted off to China last month for the finals of the Miss World contest.

The title was eventually won by Miss Mexico Vanessa Ponce de Leon, and teenager Alisha believes her rival was a worthy winner.

Alisha, from Spennymoor, County Durham, said: "Although all the girls here are deserving of the title, I honestly feel Miss Mexico was one of the most deserving.

"Vanessa Ponce De Leon is kind, fun and truly knows what Beauty With a Purpose means.

"She quit her modelling career to be a full time volunteer which really proves she’s going to me an amazing Miss World.

"If I could describe Miss Mexico in one word it would be passionate. She is so inspiring and cares so much for what she does.

"I think we could all learn something from her."

Alisha, who is currently studying forensic crime scene investigation at Teesside University, took part in a series of rehearsals and events at the Mangrove Tree Resort in Sanya while meeting dignatries.

Miss Mexico was crowned the winner out of 118 contestants in the competition finals.

And 19-year-old Alisha has spoken of her pride at participating in the competition - and her joy at being back home for Christmas.

She said: "I met so many inspirational women but the most memorable girls for me and who I had the most fun with were from the Philippines, Mexico, USA and Finland.

"I’ve missed all of my family more than I ever thought I would. I have really missed my boyfriend Joe West and also my best friend.

"It’s been strange being away from him as we spend almost every day together and we do almost everything together."

Alisha has revealed her whirlwind modelling journey since landing the crown of Miss Newcastle aged just 17 is not over yet.

Beauty With A Purpose is a charity which works closely with Miss World and supports humanitarian projects across the world.

Alisha's project with the not-for-profit organisation focused on the education of autistic children.

She finished: "I have some plans for the new year concerning my Beauty With a Purpose project which I’m really excited to work on."
